Progress Update - November 11, 2007

Posted by Double Eagle in My Progress

This Week

Definitely another good week.

The big triumph was finding a way to start waking up early again. I’ve been wanting to do that for a long, long time.

Since golf is my primary objective, I need to maximize my ability to play and practice while fitting it all in with my full time job.

Typically, I get home fairly late because I have a 45 minute commute. Before, I’d get up, stumble out of bed into the shower and get ready and go right to work. I’d get home in the 7 o’clock hour and be really hungry and thinking about dinner and how I was going to fit in a blog post and a workout and a little time for relaxation.

I’d end up staying up late because I felt like I was so rushed. But the last hour or two was just time wasted surfing the web or some other useless activity.

Now, I get up at 6:30 am and can easily go to the gym before work. Then, I feel better throughout the day and there’s not as much chance of talking myself out of going. I get in to work a little earlier than before, so I get home a little earlier. That leaves me with plenty of time to eat dinner, write a post, and relax before going to bed. On non-writing days, I get to work early and hit the gym in the evening.

My days still have 24 hours in them, but they truly feel a little longer.

I got in three good workouts this week. It probably would have been four, but I had a commitment that kept me from my Wednesday session after work.

On the weight loss front, I was up a fraction of a pound. It’s very possible that I’m adding some muscle mass while losing fat, because I’m feeling it, regardless of what the scale says.

Nonetheless, I have a couple of diet tweaks that should have me seeing a loss next week. Also, if I can get myself up to four workouts each week, that should help.

I didn’t do anything golf related this week. It has been getting colder. More importantly, after my round and driving range session last week, my surgical area was extremely sore. I thought it best to lay off for a bit. I’ve been avoiding anything at the gym that stretches or works that area and so far it’s working. I feel the best I’ve felt since before the surgery. Next week, I’ll resume working out that area and see what happens.

Overall

There’s not much to report overall. My weight is down, but had started to creep up and now it’s just about level. I expect a downward trend next week from here on out.

Tweaks

As I mentioned, I need to make a couple of tweaks to my diet to trim off some of the calories that just aren’t beneficial to me.

For instance, I like to have a couple of veggie burgers for dinner a few times a week. I keep my meat intake relatively low to keep gout problems I’ve had at bay, and veggie burgers are a good alternative for me. They’re relatively low in calories, but the rolls I have them on are not. I like them, but they’re empty calories. Instead, I’ll have one and drop both burgers on it.

The other change is in my afternoon snack/meal. Since my work day is fairly long when I include the 45 minute (each way) commute, I try to eat several times throughout the day to keep my blood sugar even so I’m not so hungry when I get home at 7:00 pm. In the late afternoon, I have a peanut butter sandwich (all natural peanut butter, nothing added) on whole wheat bread. That’s very calorie dense and the bread isn’t very beneficial. I’m going to drop that in favor of some fruit or something else that’s about half the calories.

Those two changes should reduce my weekly intake by about 1,800 calories. That plus a 4th workout will make the difference.

I know one thing: I feel mentally and physically better than I’ve felt in a while. I’m making progress in areas that were problems for me and I don’t feel like I’m swimming against the current trying to fit everything in.

Good post! Once you get yourself disciplined to getting up at 6:30 am every day other things will fall into place for you. You already seem to have a better time budget. It gives you confidence and a more positive outlook for the whole day. You just need to keep it up.

Looking forward to next week’s update.

Everything sure is falling into place. Going to the gym is a welcomed experience instead of a drag. Eating better feels good and not like I’m being deprived. Occasionally (once a week maybe), I feel like I can let myself enjoy some “naughty” foods and it won’t throw off my will power or resolve.

I only wish that it wasn’t the golf off season because I feel like I’d be making huge progress.

Once a week to treat yourself isn’t a bad idea at all. Keeps you sane.

Now the getting up early thing is another matter. I wish I could get disciplined enough again to do it. Ah well, one of these nights I’ll fire myself up for the morning and jump out of bed when I should.
