A Look Back At 2007

Posted by Double Eagle in Miscellaneous - 0 Comments

The year is just about over and it was a great one.

I didn’t accomplish many of the things that I set out to accomplish, but the road map is becoming more clear as each day passes. I accomplished some of the things on my to-do list, but fell short in some places too. I’m going to talk more about that in the next couple of days.

As for Life in the Rough, it has turned out to be great [...]

Book Review: I Call the Shots

Posted by Double Eagle in Book Reviews - 5 Comments

Johnny Miller is known for the candidness he brings to his golf commentating job with NBC. That certainly continues in his book I Call the Shots. Teaming up with Guy Yocom for the book, Miller gives us more of what keeps us tuning into NBC when he’s, well, calling the shots.

If you’re a fan of Johnny Miller, then this book is required reading. It’s an extra strong dose of Johnny. It’s got the same kind of [...]

Merry Christmas!

Posted by Double Eagle in Miscellaneous - 6 Comments

I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas or happy holidays if one of the others this time of year is your thing.

In a brief survey of the situation, I see that Santa didn’t bring a new set of irons or a plane ticket to Scotland, and it’s not 80 degrees out. So, my list didn’t pan out.

I wish all the same to you.

-Mike

Swing Plane

Once [...]

Keeping Sharp Wedge Grooves

Posted by Double Eagle in Equipment - 11 Comments

I think we all sort of intuitively know that new, sharp wedge grooves are best for getting spin around the greens. Well, that fact was scientifically verified in the January 2007 issue of Golf Magazine (p 99).

Hot Stix Golf, an independent club fitting lab, conducted an experiment to show just how much worn grooves affect ball spin on wedge shots. They tested two 56-degree sand wedges. One, a new Titleist Vokey Spin Milled wedge, and the other, [...]

  • Uneven Turf - Sidehill Lies
  • Not too long ago, I discussed hitting shots from uphill and downhill lies. The adjustments are relatively straightforward.

How about sidehill lies? Same thing. The adjustments are straightforward when you understand what’s going on. With a little practice, you can get a grip on the likely outcome and handle those shots with no problem.

    Ball Above Feet

The most important thing to remember when the ball is above your feet is that the orientation of the club (for a [...]
