Progress Update - February 24, 2008

Posted by Double Eagle in My Progress

March is less than a week away now, and I think the knowledge of that has triggered a wake-up from my golf semi-hibernation. We can still get snow here clear into April (not often), but March is the month when I know that spring is close.

Right now, I’m happy with my workouts. I’ve increased the intensity of my cardio some and am feeling pretty decent, overall. Mentally, I’m in a place where I’m looking forward to working out, instead of feeling like it’s a burden.

My work with the one-plane swing continues. I’ve gotten in a couple of range sessions and a few 9-hole rounds. The transition is going to take a while. Remembering all the keys to the swing and practicing them until they become ingrained isn’t something I can really do effectively with sporadic winter activity. I get out when I can, and try and practice segments of the swing indoors, but there’s no substitute to hitting balls.

One thing I have noticed during my two range sessions is that every so often, everything clicks and I hit some shots really well. Those flashes are exactly what I’m looking for with the one-plane swing: consistency.

Tweaks

Over the next month, I have a lot of preparation that I need to do for the season. I need to rework my in-season fitness routine, incorporating lessons learned from last year, as well as adding new things to address some weaknesses.

Also, I need to start giving serious thought to my goals for the year. I need to have a clear picture of what I want to accomplish and where I expect to be at the end of the season.

Once my goals are in order, I need to formulate my plan for achieving them. I mentioned a while back that I’m trying a golf improvement system to help me manage my goals, practice time, playing time, and all the things I need to be doing to improve my game. Organization is something I needed to improve on last season, so I hope the system will help me do that.

I expect to have goals, an updated fitness plan, and plans for play and practice in place by April 1st.

Until then, I’m going to jump at every chance the weather gives me to get a golf club in my hands. In fact, the recent snow we had here is just about gone, so I think I’ll go use my parent’s yard for a brief short game session. Sorry about the divots, mom.

  • How Often Do You Practice Recovery?
  • One thing that struck me as I watched the 2007 Masters was how professionals of that caliber can spray the ball all over the place off the tee and still manage to score. It seems obvious, but how many of us work on recovery in our practice sessions? More often than not, we’re hitting full shots or some kind of short game shot.

One of the ways I spruce up my practice time and give myself a little recovery [...]
