Life in the Rough Birthday Giveaway

Posted by Double Eagle in Miscellaneous

Note:  This contest has concluded and the winner has been announced.  Thanks to everyone for their participation.

This Friday, April 11th 2008, marks one year of Life in the Rough. It’s been an awesome year. More on that Friday, but you know what birthdays mean - that’s right - gifts!

Since I like giving gifts more than getting them, it’s time for a giveaway.

I have a dozen of the new Callaway Tour ix golf balls to give away to a Life in the Rough reader. I’ve been playing this ball for a short time and love it. Stay tuned for a review but in the meantime, I have a dozen for someone else to test drive (pun intended).

Here’s what we’re going to do.

This week brings something else that’s very dear to my heart. That’s right, The Masters. I can’t run a giveaway this week without tying it to The Masters.

To enter, all you need to do is drop a comment into this post telling me your most memorable Masters moment. It doesn’t have to be something you saw live. It could be something you read about. It can be a shot, a round, or an entire tournament performance. Just give me a moment from Masters history that’s memorable to you. In fact, just make a comment with the word “Masters” in it, and we’ll call that good enough.

The winner will be chosen at random from the comments. Entries will be open until Sunday April 13th until the moment that the winner puts on his green jacket. If there’s a weather delay forcing a Monday finish, then we’ll just call the deadline sundown on Sunday. Please review my comment policy before commenting if you’ve not done so before, as I will not be counting any entries that violate it.

Members of my family are ineligible, since my brother won last time and that wasn’t very exciting for me and cast a shadow of impropriety that my mother was quick to point out (like “quick” as in “virtually the instant that I published the results”).

Let me kick off the discussion with two of my most memorable moments. They’re somewhat recent, because frankly my memory is short, but I have so many Masters memories that are dear to me.

First, we can’t talk about the Masters without bringing up many, many Tiger Woods moments. One of the big ones, in my mind, was his win in 1997. At 21, he became the youngest Masters champion ever. It was his first major win and a sure sign of things to come. Oh yeah, and he blew away the field and won by twelve strokes.

My other favorite Masters moment was 2004. For a while, Phil Mickelson was saddled with that dreaded “best player to never win a major” tag. I like Phil and was pulling for him. He came down to the 72nd hole tied with Ernie Els and sunk a clutch birdie putt for the win. At that moment, the excitement was amazing and I felt really good for Phil having gotten out from under that pressure. He went on to win again in 2006.

Those are my two big ones, now jump into the comments section and tell me yours for a shot to win a dozen Callaway Tour ix golf balls. You get bonus karma for memories not involving Tiger Woods (too easy) or anything older than 10 years (meaning you’ve been paying attention for a while).

Let’s hear your memories!

I must agree that Phil Mickelson getting the monkey off his back by winning the Masters was a great moment.

For me it’s easy: The Miracle at Rae’s Creek.

As always, I’ll be pulling for Freddy this week, he has the chance to break Gary Player’s consecutive cut streak (22) at Augusta if he plays the weekend.

The tough thing about golf is that there are so many players that are easy to root for. It’s hard for to root for one over the rest. Fred Couples is one of my favorites for sure.

He’s been playing well of late, and if he catches a little magic, he could have a real shot.

The miracle at Rae’s Creek in 1992 happened a little before I started following golf as a fan, but I’ve seen it replayed several times. I can imagine the anxiety and then relief and then eventual excitement felt by Couples fans that day.

Gene Sarazen’s shot in 1935 comes to mind, those kinds of close games are what the game is really about to me.

While I was reading up on some “Great Moments at the Masters”, I stumbled upon an article that was originally published in the April 20, 1987 Sports Illustrated issue. It was about how a local man, Larry Mize, won the 1987 Masters by beating Greg Norman with a 140-foot chip shot on the second hole of a sudden death playoff.

Not only was this championship an unlikely win for Mize (prior to this tournament, the 28-year old Mize had only won one PGA tournament in his six years on tour), but to hit a 140-foot chip shot to knock out “The Shark” is a pretty unbelievable feat. Norman was quoted as saying, “This is probably the toughest loss I’ve ever had. The PGA was tough (referring to his loss on the 72nd-hole bunker shot that Bob Tway sank the August before), but this one…because of the shot…I think I am more disappointed now than in any tournament I’ve played.” That statement says it all.

The other interesting fact about Mize’s win is that it was the highest score (285 for 72 holes) since Jack Nicklaus’s 286 in 1972. All in all, it was a very interesting article and you gotta love it when the underdog hometown hero pulls out the big win with the unlikeliest of shots.

I’m going to be very chauvinistic here, and as a Brit claim Sandy Lyle’s getting up and down from the fairway bunker on 18 in 1988 to win as my most memorable moment. Not only was it an amazing shot out of the bunker ( 7 iron ), but the downhill putt he had to hole afterward required incredible mental fortitude. I had the enormous pleasure of walking round with Sandy at the Dutch Open some years ago, a total gentleman in everything he say and does, totally unspoiled - my hero in fact !

Congrats to A.J. on winning. Sorry I missed the contest DE.

To comment on A.J.’s, I think it was tougher on Greg Norman losing the Master because it is the one event he wanted to win the most and he was playing with Larry Mize at the time. Not to mention it is two majors in row Norman lost where the winner holed out their last shot.

Mine most vivid memory is the Tiger shot in the 2005 Masters on the 16th hole. After he pulled the shot long and left. I looked at my dad and said he is going to hit the Davis Love shot. Davis Love made a shot almost identical to Tiger’s a few years earlier. However Tiger was on Sunday while in contention.

I have to feel for Greg Norman with those tough losses in the Masters. It’s one thing to lose a tournament, but to have it happen that way it just tough to swallow.

That Tiger shot was definitely in my head when I wrote this post. How it hung on the lip and then went in was just classic. Verne Lundquist’s reaction was exciting too.

Thanks for sharing your moments, TP. Sorry you weren’t able to get in the contest, but we’ll be doing it again. Anyone else who wants to share, feel free! We can talk Masters all year long as far as I’m concerned.

  • The Buried Lie: A Sandy Grave
  • Well, it’s not really that bad. But, I thought I should cover buried lies if I’m going to stick with the beach week theme.

The good news is, the changes you need to make to play a buried lie are small and pretty simple. The bad news is, the more the ball is buried, the less you should be concerned with getting up and down and the more you should be concerned with just getting on the green.
