Progress Update: October 5, 2008

It feels a little strange to have actual progress to report, but I do.  Yesterday, after nearly two months, I was able to hit some balls at the driving range.

It was better than I thought it would be.  The knee held up OK.  On the other hand, I hadn’t hit a ball in two months, so I wasn’t expecting anything but a pile of rust laying at my feet as my body creaked and cracked.

I’m happy that I was able to recall most of the points I had been working on in my lessons.  I found that I have pretty much lapsed back into hitting pull-draws.  As you may recall, I was making great progress in that area.  In fact, I was injured as I just barely started to conquer the problem.

As I hit more shots, I was able to apply the same fixes I was working on before.  By the end of a small basket of balls, I was back to hitting some solid shots.

I figured the best way to celebrate is to go out this afternoon and play nine holes to see where my game stands.  Alas, it was not meant to be because there’s a charity outing out there today and I’m not so determined that I’m moved to go somewhere else.

On the knee front, it’s starting to improve.  I have a few more weeks of physical therapy.  That seems to be helping.  I also have a series of three injections of Euflexxa scheduled.  Euflexxa is similar to the natural fluid that helps to lubricate joints.  Essentially, my knee will be getting a lube job.

I’ve also started working out again, which is great because I’ve been feeling pretty run-down lately.  I need some of the pep that comes from activity.

All in all, things are well, with the exception of the fact that it’s now October.  The days are getting shorter, making it difficult to get in any play or practice after work and cold weather is right around the corner.

I’m also under orders to take it slow with my return to golf.  I can’t play and practice every day yet and I have to pay attention to what my knee is telling me.  There’s still a chance that the therapy and injections won’t get me where I need to be and I’ll have to look at surgery.  Right now, I’m not too worried about that.

All that aside, things are still looking up.
