Coming late to this party, but I just found your blog today. ;-)

I'm with you (and them) on this. I think it really does help, even for somewhat slow swing speeds like mine. I've played 36 holes over the past week and a half since I started trying to adopt this method and as often as not I'm "bombing" my drives as long as the guys I play with (all of whom crush me in distance as a rule). I can get within 10-15 yards of even the longest hitter in my league when I connect well.

For deciding placement, I ground my club about 4 inches behind the ball, and then line up with the toes of my left foot (I'm right-handed) pointing at the club head. I try to keep my weight centered just behind the club head and focus on a smooth, steady and somewhat flat swing plane (too steep and I risk hitting the ground behind the ball). If I try to over swing I can get the dreaded sky ball as I shift the whole swing too far forward in my hurry to clobber the ball.

Really, until yesterday when my whole game changed again (see my Stack & Tilt comments) my driver has been my best club, and I think at least some of that has the changed ball placement to thank.
