Golfer in Development, the easiest way to tell is to leave the beverages for the 19th hole a few times and see what happens.

Hey Mike, I had a question for you, I am currently polishing off my game, I am by no means looking for a pro career, but I am very competitive and hate losing to my friends. I love nothing more than to go out enjoy the weather, beat my friends and have a few cold beers in the process. However, I have a difficult time recovering from those "bad mistakes", you know, the small errors that seem insignificant at first and than just seem to pile up and completely throw me off my game. A friend of mine, a personal development golf trainer, who preaches self improvement, says that maybe I could keep my cool better if it weren’t for my beverage of choice. I just wanted to hear your 2 cents on this as you take this much more seriously than I do!
Thanks!!!

That's definitely a skill, Paladin. I've never tried to play in that condition, but it seems pretty prevalent, so obviously some people have sharpened that ability.

You forgot one important recovery skill: sobering up to play in the morning after a night of drinkin'.

Perhaps some readers experienced in that facet of the game can comment.

I often find myself not taking my medicine and just "going for it" the problem is that i almost always end up making things worse. The way is see it is that if i do go for it and i end up making that miracle shot it really feels great! Maybe i need some more self control.

I feel your pain, Diane. I haven't hit a ball since Thanksgiving which has to be a new record for me. I didn't have this long a layoff when I had my gall bladder out and I certainly was able to play more than this last winter.

TP, I think that's a great point. Understanding how lies will react is certainly an important skill. I'd also say that knowing that you can't easily predict how certain lies will react is part of that too. I'm sure we've all had that one sitting in the rough that comes out like a rocket.

Maybe this would not be called a skill but it does come from experience and some common sense (and it related to managing expectations), but knowing how the ball will react coming out of various lies. How will the lie affect the golf club as it approaches and impacts the ball? Will the ball come out high/low or soft/hot?

Great article, Mike. Someday soon (hopefully within my lifetime) the sun will come out, the snow and ice will melt, the grass will be green, and I'll be able to hit golf balls to my heat's content. When that day comes I'll read this one again to get my head straight because as you've said, the most important recovery skill is mental.

I don't know, TP, it seems like a lot of us have standards that are unrealistically high. I bet if you asked a mid-handicapper how many shots he'll pull off correctly in an 18 hole round, you'll get an answer that's a lot higher than 5 or 6. Part of that, obviously, is that Hogan would give himself a much narrower gate for success on each shot, as you pointed out. But, if you forced that mid-level player to call his shot before he hit each one, you'd probably find that his expectation is much different from reality too. He might be lucky to match Hogan's 5 or 6 perfect shots, even with lower standards for each.

Ben Hogan said that he would it 5-6 shots a round that would turn out as he envisioned. But mind you he was a perfectionist and his standards would be higher than us.
