I decided last last season that it was time to get some new irons this year. Coincidentally, one of my long-stated goals is to get a club fitting. Perfect. At least until it started to unfold anyway. I’m not an “off the rack” guy when it comes to irons. I typically play them longer and more upright than standard and I also use mid-size grips. Because of this, I know that when it’s time to get new irons, I need to order them. That means they get put together at the factory to my specifications. That also means that it takes anywhere from two to six weeks to get new irons, depending on the manufacturer. Since I wanted to have them for the start of the season, when the calendar flipped to March, I knew I needed to get moving if I wanted to get a fitting first. So, last week, I scheduled a fitting at a great golf shop in King of Prussia, PA, called Golfdom. Most of you who live in this region

This is the time of winter when golf progress is pretty much at a stand still because of the weather, but it’s been several weeks, so I thought I ‘d talk about some of the other things I’m working on. Since I started this journey, I’ve always known from day one that fitness and weight loss would be critical. And truthfully, I’ve struggled. I’ve made gains in the area of fitness that always seem to turn into ups and downs as I improve things and then have down periods like winter or during injuries. Then, I’m forced to climb the mountain again and regain that lost progress. I’ve also had trouble losing weight like I want. All until recently, anyway. Things have really started to fall into place for me over the last few weeks. As I approach two years at this, I think I finally learned enough to begin to put the pieces together. I’ve tried many things that haven’t worked, but each setback has forced me to learn something. Currently, I’m down about

A new day dawns. OK, it’s technically a new year that I’m talking about, but you get my drift. I never like New Year’s resolutions, because usually they’re empty and if you’re going to resolve to improve your life, there’s no good reason to wait until the beginning of a new year. Do it now! In my case, I had a two week vacation over the Christmas holiday with nothing planned except normal family stuff. It gave me a lot of time to think about what I want to accomplish this year. After reflecting on the past couple of years, it became clear that I need to improve upon what I’m doing because I’m not making the progress that I’d like (though I have made progress). First off, I need a plan for each area of my life I’m going to improve. A look at my to-do list and some nudging by The Happy Rock tells me that I neglected creation of a diet plan for quite a while. I have come to realize that

I really have a disdain for cold weather golf anymore. It’s hard to make any real improvement when I can’t get on the course or the driving range with any regularity. The conditions are more difficult to play in. The cold keeps my muscles stiff. Nonetheless, I was able to get out for nine holes today for the first time in weeks. I wouldn’t say I played well, but I did better than I expected. I’d say my ball striking was much better than I figured it would be, but naturally everything was just a little off. I wasn’t holing any putts and my short game was imprecise. I have to keep reminding myself that the weather and course conditions play a part in all that. In 44-degree weather, I need to remind myself to club up. When I hit a short drive, I need to remind myself that the fairways are saturated and there’s a 1 or 2 club wind in my face. The greens are fairly bumpy during this time of year. I’m

Improving one’s golf game and maintaining it at a desired level is much like bailing out a sinking boat. Stop practicing and playing (bailing water) and the boat sinks straight to the bottom. Since my untimely knee injury in August, my golf game settled down to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Today, I got hold of a robot submarine to scout the condition of my wreck down in the murky deep. I headed out to the course this afternoon to see where I stand. I had no intention of keeping score. I just wanted to play through some holes and hit balls from a variety of situations to see where I’m at. Before I went out, I hit 60 or 70 balls on the range to warm up and try and find my tempo. I did a little better than I expected. I took several steps backward from where I was at when I got hurt, but all the things I was working on in August started to come back to me. All in
