Book Review: Follow the Roar

Follow the Roar

Follow the Roar, by Bob Smiley, is a chronicle of Smiley’s journey to accomplish the seemingly impossible task of following Tiger Woods on every single hole of every single tournament during the 2008 season. I have to be truthful in saying that when I first got my hands on the book, I didn’t have high expectations.  I pictured a sort of logbook of every shot Tiger made in 2008.  It was probably his most amazing season, given his winning five times in seven tournaments on a bad knee and broken leg.  And in the two he “lost” he finished second at the Masters and fifth at the WGC CA Championship. But  I wasn’t sure how compelling it would be to read about every hole.   I was wrong.  Smiley caught my attention early and kept it through the end of the book.  Tiger is obviously the centerpiece of the book, but I’m a road trip-loving guy and Smiley’s adventure was a fun ride for me. The Good It’s quite a fun read.  At the time

Accessory Review: Swing Reminders

swingreminders1

I was recently contacted by Scott Jesse, president of Swing Reminders, Inc. and given the opportunity to try out his product, called Swing Reminders.  Scott is the Head Golf Professional at Turquoise Valley Golf Course in Naco, Arizona. As most of us know, swing thoughts are an important part of the golf swing.  Keeping out the mental clutter is critical to remaining focused on a single swing thought.  Keeping focused on a single swing thought is sometimes easier said than done, however, as our minds tend to wander. According to Scott: For years I carried a small piece of paper in my right pocket when playing golf. I would write a swing thought or two on the paper. Something to keep me thinking about simple swing thoughts, instead of letting my head go nuts and think about too many things. Every time I would reach in my pocket to get a tee or a ball marker, I would feel the paper and pull it out to give me another little reminder. Out of a sound

Book Review: The Right Sticks

therightsticks

The subtitle says it all: “Equipment myths that could wreck your golf game.” The Right Sticks, by Tom Wishon with Tom Grundner, covers 37 myths about golf equipment that could be costing you strokes. The book tackles equipment myths about club heads, shafts, full clubs, club fitting, balls, grips and more.  Wishon covers myths, misunderstandings, and outright marketing lies that pervade the golf equipment industry and keep most of us from reaching our golfing potential. Tom Wishon has an extensive background in the equipment industry.  He has been designing clubs for over 33 years and has designed clubheads that have won on the PGA Tour, Champions Tour, and the Ryder Cup.  He has over fifty design firsts to his credit, has written more than 200 magazine articles on golf club technology and has been a member of the Golf Digest technical advisory panel since 1994. Wishon brought his extensive experience into The Right Sticks to help players overcome marketing hype and maximize their own potential. Some of my favorite myths from the book: Modern golf

Review: Stack and Tilt Instructional DVD Set

It amazes me still that the Stack and Tilt swing has taken such a strong hold on the golfing world.  Really, though, it shouldn’t surprise me because the number of players I’ve heard from that have had great success with the swing is staggering. Starting with an article in Golf Digest, the swing swept through driving ranges and back yards like wildfire.  With such a limited resource for information, players were forced to resort to internet discussion to try and learn as much as possible about this strange new swing that was giving them great results. Then, prayers were answered when Stack and Tilt architects Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer created a 4-disc instructional video series.  Distributed by Medicus Golf, the DVD set covers everything you need to know about the Stack and Tilt swing, and much more. Disc Contents Disc one – Swing overview Disc two – Stack and Tilt in-depth Disc three – Analyzing your shot Disc four – Short Game For some more information about the contents of the DVD set, a
